1. UALC will work with the Gierman family to assess needs and will offer financial assistance from UALC’s Good Samaritan fund as necessary. The Good Samaritan Fund has long been the vehicle for UALC to support those in financial need and therefore we do not create separate funds in such situations. Gifts given to the Good Samaritan fund are tax deductible since they meet the IRS’s requirement of being given to the support and use of an exempt organization (i.e., UALC). A gift given to UALC directed to the benefit an individual does not meet that IRS requirement and therefore is not tax deductible.
2. You may give a gift to either of these funds created for the Gierman’s benefit. It is not known how these organizations are representing the tax status of these funds but, based on the clear requirements of the IRS, it doesn’t appear that gifts to either would be tax deductible.
