The sermon yesterday was on Jesus Feeding the 5000. I was surprised to learn that this is the only miracle (apart from the Resurrection, of course) reported in all four Gospels. It got me to asking, Why is this one so important? Here's my take:
- Because the Feeding of the 5000 looks back to the Main Event of the Old Testament -- the Exodus, when the Lord redeems his people from slavery to Pharaoh and gives them manna in the Wilderness
- Because the Feeding of the 5000 looks forward to the Main Event of the New Testament -- the Cross, when the Lord redeems his people from slavery to sin
- Because the Feeding of the 5000 looks forward to the Last Supper, when the Lord feeds his people on the bread that is his body
- Because the Feeding of the 5000 looks out to feed the people who were hungry right there and then, feeding their souls with the Gospel and their bodies with the bread

See you at our Thanksgiving Eve sevice this Wednesday at 7:30...
I just loved the looking back and looking forward added to the feeding miracle. Best I've ever heard on the feeding of the 5,000.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on passing 100. I have about 10,000, but I've been blogging since Oct. 2003.
