Joseph the husband of Mary is a character often overlooked in the Greatest Story Ever Told, but Joseph's story (Matthew 1:18-25) speaks volumes about his character. When confronted with a scandal, he resolved on his own to do the right thing: he would divorce Mary quietly rather than make a public example of her.
But then the Lord stepped in to guide him. The Lord sent an angel to Joseph in a dream, telling him that he could be a husband to Mary and a father to Jesus, because he was as son of the King. And that's exactly what Joseph did: regardless of the cost or of what people might say, he took Mary as his wife and called Jesus his son.
Men who believe in Jesus are sons of the King, too, and He calls us to be like Joseph: to love our wife, to love our children, to be the man he has called us to be as His sons.
